Here is the song we learned in class today about Christopher Columbus. (The song is sung to the tune of "Mary Had A Little Lamb.")
Students sing to your parents, and parents ask you students to sing it to you and then sing along.
COLUMBUS DAY("Mary Had a LIttle Lamb.")
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
Ocean blue,ocean blue.
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
In fourteen-ninety-two.
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
Ocean blue,ocean blue.
I enjoy making discoveries,too.
How about you?
Here is the website we got the song from:

October Newsletter
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
The first quarter has flown by. I can hardly believe that it is already October. This month will begin Miss Barela’s solo teaching. She will be teaching the class until Thanksgiving break. I will in the building supporting the first grade team during this time. If you have any questions about your child during this time please direct them to Miss Barela. Miss Barela has been doing a fantastic job teaching students.
Here is what we are learning:
Reading: We are working on discussing the sequence of a story (beginning, middle, end) as well as the characters and setting in a story. Students are also practicing using reading strategies (picture clues, text, and re-reading) to solve unknown words in text.
Writing: We are concentrating on 3 of the 7 writing traits. So far we have focused on ideas and word choice. Students will be working on the trait of organization as it relates to writing. Students are still working on writing using complete sentences, finger spaces, capitals at the beginning of sentences, and punctuation at the end of sentences.
Math: We are working on estimation to 100, drawing a picture to solve addition and subtraction word problems, counting by 1’s, 10’s, and 2’s to 100, and discussing numbers with place value (21= 2 tens 1 one).
Social Studies: We are learning about all the holidays.
Science: We are finishing up our weather kit and will be starting our solids and liquids kit.
Our classroom door is always open to parents. If you would like to come in and observe or help out please call me and let me know. I look forward to seeing all of you sometime in the classroom.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at 579-3663.
