Powerpoint Presentations Part 1
Our first grade class made Powerpoint presentations as a wrap up activity to our holiday social studies unit. Students were asked to make three slides. The first two slides needed to have information the student learned about the holiday and one picture. The third slide needed to have pictures that represented their holiday. Enjoy!

Mapping
Hello Parents,
Our class has been working on mapping in social studies. I am posting the link that you can type in an address and view maps of the place and the roads. Try it out and have your child show you how to work it.

More Holidays
So far we have talked about Christopher Columbus and why we celebrate Columbus Day.
We have also talked in depth about Martin Luther King Jr. We did an experiment in class regarding how people might have felt during Martin Luther King's time. We divided the class into boys and girls. During the morning the girls were able to have more freedom and were praised more than the boys. At mid-morning we switched and the boys were praised more and had more freedom. The students may have not been able to see the connection to Martin Luther King, but they were still able to recognize how hard and mean it was to separate the two.
In the upcoming weeks we will be discussing Veteran's Day, Christmas, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and President's Day.
The students are preparing a Power Point Presentation of their favorite Holiday. When the projects are completed we will be inviting family and friends in to view their power points.

Columbus Day Song
Here is the song we learned in class today about Christopher Columbus. (The song is sung to the tune of "Mary Had A Little Lamb.")
Students sing to your parents, and parents ask you students to sing it to you and then sing along.
COLUMBUS DAY("Mary Had a LIttle Lamb.")
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
Ocean blue,ocean blue.
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
In fourteen-ninety-two.
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
Ocean blue,ocean blue.
I enjoy making discoveries,too.
How about you?
Here is the website we got the song from:

October Newsletter
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
The first quarter has flown by. I can hardly believe that it is already October. This month will begin Miss Barela’s solo teaching. She will be teaching the class until Thanksgiving break. I will in the building supporting the first grade team during this time. If you have any questions about your child during this time please direct them to Miss Barela. Miss Barela has been doing a fantastic job teaching students.
Here is what we are learning:
Reading: We are working on discussing the sequence of a story (beginning, middle, end) as well as the characters and setting in a story. Students are also practicing using reading strategies (picture clues, text, and re-reading) to solve unknown words in text.
Writing: We are concentrating on 3 of the 7 writing traits. So far we have focused on ideas and word choice. Students will be working on the trait of organization as it relates to writing. Students are still working on writing using complete sentences, finger spaces, capitals at the beginning of sentences, and punctuation at the end of sentences.
Math: We are working on estimation to 100, drawing a picture to solve addition and subtraction word problems, counting by 1’s, 10’s, and 2’s to 100, and discussing numbers with place value (21= 2 tens 1 one).
Social Studies: We are learning about all the holidays.
Science: We are finishing up our weather kit and will be starting our solids and liquids kit.
Our classroom door is always open to parents. If you would like to come in and observe or help out please call me and let me know. I look forward to seeing all of you sometime in the classroom.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at 579-3663.

Class Changes
Hello Parents! Thank you all for being so supportive with the move of some of our classroom students into Mr. De Gunya's class. It has been difficult for students and teachers to adjust to the change. I appreciate your patience and understanding for helping support our students with smaller class sizes. The smaller class size has allowed us to give more one on one attention to our students.

September Spanish Newsletter
Estimados padres,

Week 8/31/09 Newsletter
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
I wanted to talk to you about the grading scale that I am going to start using on papers. I am trying to match my grades to our report cards. When you get your child’s paper home it will have a percentage grade and a letter. Here is what the letter means:
Advanced A (Student is exceeding grade level expectations)
Proficient P (Student is meeting grade level expectations)
Partially Proficient PP (Student is working toward grade level expectations)
Unsatisfactory U (Student has a good start toward grade level expectations)
Here is what we are learning:
Reading: We are working on discussing the sequence of a story (beginning, middle, end) as well as the characters and setting in a story.
Writing: We are working on putting finger spaces between words and making sure the words are written on the line. We are also working on having capitals at the beginning of our sentences and punctuation (. ? !) at the end. Students are using a BME (beginning, middle, end) plan.
Math: We are working on writing our numbers to 100, describing numbers as greater or less than, reading number words to 20, and writing number words to 10. Students are still practicing how to solve word problems by drawing a picture.
Social Studies: We are learning about Labor Day and how to read and use maps.
Science: We are starting our weather kit. We will be talking about using our four senses (touch, sight, hearing, and smell) to record the weather. We will also be making and using a wind flag to describe the wind.
Homework starts this week. The spelling list for this week is attached. I have also attached a sheet explaining how to go to a spelling website for students to practice their words using games and tests. Our classroom door is always open to parents. If you would like to come in and observe or help out please call me and let me know. I look forward to seeing all of you sometime in the classroom.
